Character's name: Jeff (Joker) Moreau
Character's canon: Mass Effect 2
Brief personality outline of your character:
Joker, like his name suggests, is a bit of a joker. He's arrogant, cheeky, and unabashedly forward with his opinions. His arrogance stems from the fact he's one of the best pilots in the alliance, and he is very much aware of that fact. However, his abilities back up his talk, and he's been shown to be capable of feats that others deemed 'impossible', i.e dropping the Mako in a 20 sq. ft zone. Self-assured may be a better adjective to describe Joker, but his confidence goes beyond casual assuredness. Joker knows what he's doing, and he wants other people to know too. He gets defensive when his abilities or choices are second guessed, and this often put him at odds with the Normany SR-2s AI, EDI. Joker is highly proud of his skills, and he's always quick to remind people that all his accomplishments were deservedly achieved, and not handed out as a sort of pity award. His arrogance also works as a defensive mechanism. Joker is well aware of his handicap, which makes it nearly impossible for him to casually run, or even walk. This handicap pushed him to excel in flight instructor school, to the point where he was so hard at work that he had no time to smile. By graduation his hard work had paid off, and no one had a bigger smile than him that day. In Joker's own words: "They all got their asses kicked by the sickly kid with the creaky little legs." Joker has worked exceptionally hard to make up and surpass his disability, and it shows in his exceptional piloting.

Joker is very candid with his words, and gives Shepard his straightforward and often sarcastic opinion on new party members when asked. Unlike other ship mates who would find more tactful way of stating their opinion, Joker says what he thinks. He casually remarks on how Shepard seems to be collecting trained killers like Pokemon, and comments about back-seat driving when Shepard stands behind him for too long. In a way, his candidness is refreshing. For a lady of Shepard's standing, there are few who would be as brutally honest with her as Joker is. While the old Alliance crew treated Shepard like their commander, Joker was far less worried about rank, evidenced when he quickly (and unnecessarily) defended his position as pilot when Shepard asked him if everything is fine. Part of it could stem from the fact he's so self assured about his abilities that he knows he's irreplaceable, but most is of it is probably just his natural personality. Prickly, straight-shooting, and self defensive, almost like a cactus. That is, if a cactus ever got the urge to turn off internal compensators and pull a Crazy Ivan.

Joker is cheerful, witty, and full of bad jokes. Either situations cause him less stress compared to the rest of the crew, or he's better at hiding it. It's probably a good combination of both, and he often vents his stress with sarcastic remarks. He comments how he wish they could piss off a planet of bunnies for once, and after stealing the Normandy in the 1st game, Joker's only complaint is that no one is chasing them. As chill as Joker can be, he also can be completely serious when necessary. He goes into no nonsense mode while on missions, putting his full concentration on his job of making sure everyone gets out alive. When Shepard is force to leave either Ashley or Kaiden behind, Joker will actually have nothing witty to say, but instead ask that he be given some alone time. He may crack a joke or two on the job or after a mission, but never at the expense of his work. If Shepard needs something done, Joker will have it done, no questions asked. If Shepard needs the Mako dropped on the head of a pin, Joker will find a way to do it.

To elaborate more on the defensive part of Joker's personality, we have to touch on how his ilness, Vrolik's syndrome, has affected him. Joker is well aware of what he's capable of, and his biggest issue is when others downplay his abilities. When he first works together with EDI, their relationship is confrontational; Joker is apprehensive about having an AI on board, and unhappy with having someone constantly overlooking his work. Their relationship improves, and Joker goes from dislike to one of mutual understanding, before they finally develop an 'equitable working relationship'. While some of Joker's dislike stemmed from having someone constantly check over his work, most of it probably came from worry that EDI could replace him as pilot. If an AI can almost replace the entire crew of the Normandy, it's quite possible she could have taken the pilot's chair as well. For Joker, piloting the ship is more than just his speciality, it's also freedom for a guy who can barely walk on his own. Luckily, the two work better as a team, and their abilities complement each other enough to where both can do what one alone could not.

All in all, Joker is a not a super trained elite soldier like the rest of the Normandy crew. He excels at piloting, and he's happiest when in the pilot's chair. He isn't intimidated by the N7 designation Shepard wears, or the fact the entire Normandy crew could kill him five ways from Saturday without blinking an eye. While he is smart enough to shut up about 'testier' crew members such as Jack, he knows he has a skill none of them will ever come close to matching. He's the best damn pilot in the galaxy, and that's something they can replicate or replace.

Sample post:

The strangest part of the whole situation was how silent the Normandy was. Even in the wee hours of the morning there had always been something; the white buzz of machinery, the scant electronic hum that Joker associated with EDI's big brother habit, or even just the light rustling of a minor crewman in the background. Joker had finally gotten used to the dim glow of disabled systems, but the stifling silence was the most disconcerting. 'Really fucking creepy' was the way he really wanted to put it, but the impact of his words seemed lost without an audience.

He'd gotten used to the Beast (to Joker, calling the Transmigration 9 a ship would be like comparing the Matrix to The Sims), and he had almost become used to the creepy suit. He'd never admit it, but he still shuddered every time he felt the damn thing move, and it moved often. Sure, standard Alliance wear had cut off circulation in certain sensitive areas, but at least he didn't have nightmares where his uniform ate him. There was also that new AI, Stacy. For a while Joker had considered referring to her as 'the other woman', but people tended to take his words seriously, and it gave off the completely wrong impression. Sure Stacy seemed nice and helpful, but so were the V before they began total world domination. Working with EDI had been one thing, but trusting Stacy was another thing entirely. He would have never admitted it, but EDI was different from the other AIs out there. It went deeper than mere technical differences; EDI understood what he needed, and he could depend on her. Sure she could be a pain in the ass, but they had a mutual understanding. A synergy of sorts, if Joker felt like pulling out big words.

The point was, Stacy wasn't part of the Normandy or it's crew, and Joker didn't trust her. Of course he had a professional interest in how the Transmigration 9 flew, what her bridge looked like, and her specs, but beyond that, Joker didn't want to get involved. There was something uncanny about a living ship, and the less he was involved with it- her- whatever, the better. That was his excuse as to why he spent so much time aboard the Normandy, even when she was grounded.

"Turning off all internal compensators, and internal environment controls if I can find that..."

Joker announced loudly, in an attempt to break the silence in the empty bridge. If EDI was hibernating somewhere in the ship, hiding in the engineering deck, sulking in her core room... that would have brought her running.

The deck stayed silent, and Joker sighed.

There was a certain bit of irony to the whole situation. A while back, Joker would have sold his left kidney to finally have EDI shut up. Now that he finally had the bridge all to himself, he found himself missing her.

"First sign of insanity, talking to yourself." Joker muttered darkly, before pushing himself farther back into his seat. It was times like these where he missed the Normandy's crew, even all the killer assassin ninjas that Shepard seemed so fond of.

If the character has magic, mutant, or otherwise metahuman abilities, please explain what they are and outline EXACTLY how they function, as their powers may not work due to the nature of the ship or may need to be limited somehow:
none at all!
